Although I had dabbled quite seriously with a plant-powered fuel source since the early eighties for health and performance reasons, it wasn’t until 2005 that I became vegan.
But what does it mean to be vegan? Veganism is about justice. That is, veganism is a mindset that says it’s wrong to exploit others—human or otherwise—regardless of the perceived benefits. Thus us vegans simply do the best we can every day to avoid funding the exploitation industry. That’s why nowadays you won’t see me knowingly buying meat, dairy, eggs, leather, wool, honey, certain diamonds and cocoa, etcetera, nor funding zoos, circuses, rodeos, etcetera, or any other forms of exploitation.
